    Description

You are bidding on the second cover of a set of 100 first day covers containing stamps issued in the Marshall Islands commemorating the 50th anniversaries of the 100 most significant events starting with the invasion of Poland and ending up with the end of World War II on VJ day, September 2, 1945.
This second cover depicts the Battleship HMS Royal Oak which was torpedoed and sunk while at the British Navy’s main anchorage at Scapa Flow off the east coast of the Orkney Islands by German U-boat U-47 on Friday, October 13, 1939. This cover is part of a salute to the history of World War II in stamps. The cover is dual cancelled and the red cancellation is from Majuro proper on October 13, 1989, on the 50th anniversary. The cover bears a 45 cent "Sinking of HMS Royal Oak 1939" Marshall Islands stamp. The cover is signed by Sailass Andrike, Director of Post for the Republic of the Marshall Islands. The creator of the cover is a member of the American Philatelic Society.  Because these covers are individually created, there may be a slight difference in each, i.e., stamp placement, post mark placement and signature.
