    Description

    On offer here is a
    very old porcelain sign from old London
    .  How old?  Old enough that the porcelain is fired
    over marble
    .  Perhaps that is because a porcelain over marble sign would outlast porcelain over steel signs which used to rust.  When I saw the sign I wanted it pretty badly but when I found out it was marble I was floored.
    I cannot guess how old it is but I would truly like to know if you have any information.  When I look at maps of London I see that this street is only
    one block long.
    That would probably mean that the sign never had more than one other duplicate if you assume that one was on each corner.
    In the image gallery you will see two shots from the 1940 Alfred Hitchcock directed movie “Foreign Correspondent”.  The exact style of sign is shown on the front side of Westminster Cathedral and also on the front of the New Scotland Yard.  The image on the New Scotland Yard is dark since it was supposed to be a foggy night in the movie (what else?).  The same wood framing surrounding the stone and porcelain sign and the same two type fonts are used as in my sign.  So we know the sign is from at least 1940 and possible a good deal earlier.
    According to research about this street, it was called “Marrowbone Street” until the 1600’s then it was named ‘Warwick Street”.  Of course the sign is much newer than 1600’s but that is an interesting tidbit of knowledge.
    An extremely interesting sign that I know you will display with pride.  Until it is sold it will hang in a prominant place in my British themed workshop

    Shipping: This sign will require significant packing to insure the marble does not break.  I know how to pack things in this way but I am charging a surcharge for this special packing.  The last thing I want is to see the marble cracked.  Having said this, I will ship the sign for a FLAT RATE FEE within the Continental United States for 5.00. I am sure that will not cover the actual cost but I will absorb the rest.
